Gervas
(1907-2009) was Violet's elder son. He married Betty in 1936, and they had four children:- Gill, Robin, Nigel and Crispin.
When War broke out in 1939, Gervas applied to join up, but his request was refused, as, at 32, he was "too old" - his younger colleagues were allowed to join up. His was regarded as a "reserved occupation" - he was "the Government" over his District, 2/3rds the size of Wales, with a population of some 70,000 African tribesmen. Apart from "a dozen bearded missionaries who never wash". he was the only white man in the District.
Gervas spent his working life in Northern Rhodesia, and the family retired to Somerset.
