My dear Violet -

Our thoughts have been all for you since we heard the very sad and unexpected news that your very dear Gerard was dead.

You were such a truly devoted Husband and Wife and your loving dutiful sons from the first made a great impression and I have always looked on you all as a Family to admire and be proud of knowing.

It does make me very sad to think that wonderful association is at last broken. But it has stood for many years and remained happy and beautiful right up to the last day of Gerard's life.

Hilda was devoted to Gerard and to all of you and you were so good to her and such firm friends. She feels the loss of her dear Brother very very deeply. And so of course do I, and you have always been so very kind to me and unhesitatingly accepted me in the Family circle. I remember your sitting beside me at our Wedding luncheon and how charming and sweet you were.

I wish the miles did not so distantly divide us, but our sympathy is there for you and for your Boys and their good wives and their Children.

If there is anything we can do for you over here either now or later on you have only to let us know.

It is very sad for Hilda and for me to feel now we cannot see him again – and we were so near doing so and looking forward to it.

Please accent this poor expression of very genuine love and sympathy and real appreciation of a    great good man.

For all of you and you especially, Violet dear, you have the consolation of having given him great Love and Happiness and given him everything he wanted from Life.

Always affectionately

Jack
