STUNTS/CHOREOGRAPHYLegionXXXIII specialises in our own unique form of combat reenactment, which we are entitling "Impro-Choreographed Stunt-Combat" [I.C.S.C.]It is a fairly strenuous and demanding cross between martial arts, dance and acrobatics, and never fails to yield some impressive results, which has brought us very encouraging positive feedback.
The essence of I.C.S.C. is that in order to provide the audience with a thrilling enough spectacle, it is necessary to recreate as much of the atmosphere of real combat as possible, with the paradox being that of course this is ultimately impossible, because it isn't real combat. So instead what we create is the element of the unexpected within our stunt/fight routines.
Some reenactors simply beat their opponents shields to pieces, hoping to win over the crowd with their usually loud and machoistic attitudes. The commentators make a meal of laboriously stating the obvious "these men in their unrealistically shiny armour are going to pretend to kill each other... blah blah blah", taking as much time as possible to "set the scene" and set their "combatants" up. Scornful of any form of choreography, they insist on "realism", sadly failing to realise that this approach is not going to be as effective as they think it will be.
Conversely, actors who insist on choreographing every element to their fight also fall short of their intended standard, as the sudden impact of the audiences attention "under the limelight" brings a rushed, badly concealed "we're rushing through our lines" approach. Impro-Choreographed Stunt Combat works along the obvious lines of combining the two; certain parts of the display are well rehearsed moves, which punctuate periods of tense uncertainty. As already mentioned, we are finding this approach works very effectively, both in terms of enjoyment for the participants, and general good entertainment value for the spectators.
As a reenactment group we are very much interested in depicting a variety of scenario's, including armed combat, drill & tactical formations and a range of other dramatic displays. The scope of these performances very much depend on either the request of the customer/event host, and what is available in the way of materials and general "background"...
