Far North Sixes 2012
18 September 2012

It was another beautiful sunny day in Scourie on Saturday 2nd June for the Far North Shinty Sixes. The annual competition hosted by Kinlochbervie Camanachd got underway with a hard fought fast paced game between Loch Broom A and B in the Open Section. Following them were Farr A and B with the home sides, KLB A and B following suit. The 14 & Under section got underway with a draw between Farr and Loch Broom followed by the two KLB teams A and B with a win for A. The games were all back to back 15 minutes one way and the speed and skill involved was great to watch. As the afternoon progressed some great Shinty was on show and one of the most exciting games between KLB A and Farr A resulted in a penalty followed by a goal hit not from the ground but from high above the player’s head, the result being a 2-1 win for KLB. While the pitch was busy with games, the barbecue, teas and Shinty Shop were doing a roaring trade and the amount of support shown for the event from all the communities was fantastic. It was great to see so many people out watching Shinty and cheering on the teams. In the 14 & Under section it was a close call with KLB A needing to win their last game to take the cup. Farr however held them to a 0-0 draw denying the home side a place on the rostrum. The Open section was powering on with Loch Broom A clearly out in the lead on the scoreboard. Loch Broom B were looking as contenders for second place after a great game against KLB B who despite losing 2-1 put on a hard game against the Ullapool team. KLB A were then in the lead on goal difference but wanted to secure the silver medals with a win. They got their wish with a 4-0 win over Farr B in the last game of the tournament with one amazing goal from a shy. The games were refereed by Al Hunter who did a sterling job throughout the day assisted by KLB Coach, Duncan Clark. The presentations took place in the evening sun with a jubilant Loch Broom A lifting the cup in the Open Section and Farr doing the same in the 14 & Under section. Runners up were KLB Camanachd A (open) and Loch Broom (14 & Under). The referee was also tasked with picking the junior and senior players of the tournament. Shane Campbell(Farr) was named Junior Player and Sophie Clark (KLB B) Senior Player. Kinlochbervie Camanachd would like to thank all the teams who travelled through to play and all the parents, friends and members of the communities who helped out and supported during the day. A fantastic £780 was raised for Kinlochbervie Camanachd, money which will benefit all the youngsters involved in the Shinty Club in the next year.
