Friendly Match v Farr, 1st October 2011
27 October 2011

Report from Northern Times 7-10-11

It was a meeting of old rivals when the Kinlochbervie and Farr High School teams met in Scourie on Saturday for a friendly game of Shinty.
The match took off with a flying start, Donald Mackay, KLB and Ruraidh Macleod, Farr taking the throw-up. KLB quickly won possession of the ball, passing well and getting the ball down the pitch to their forwards where Jack Hatherall wasted no time in finding the back of the net and taking first blood for the home team in 53 seconds. KLB kept the pressure up, Donald and Ruraidh continued to battle it out midfield and with the strong and determined defence of KLB stalwarts Sophie Clark and Iain Allison assisted by Neil Hathaway, Farr struggled to get near the opposition goal. There was great Shinty played in the midfield from both sides, Farr’s Luke Bruce was showing great strength and determination winning the ball only to have it battered back down to the KLB forwards where young James Flett was in a perfect position to take the cross from Jack and score KLB’s second goal in the 25th minute.
It was a more determined Farr side coming back on after the half time break but KLB were as equally determined to hold on to their lead. There were sticks clashing all over the pitch to win the ball but when a very determined Billy Corbett took a long high hit at the Farr goal 54 minutes in, players and spectators seemed to stop to watch the ball in slow motion go over the head of the keeper taking the score to 3-0 for KLB. The young Farr goalie, Connor Cook, however did not lose heart and saved a fast airborne shot at goal with the edge of his stick high above his head showing great skill and denying KLB another goal. There were more missed opportunities from the KLB forwards as the game neared its conclusion and great play from the midfield and defence of the KLB side giving their goalie not a lot to worry about. When referee Duncan Clark blew the final whistle it was to a jubilant cheer from the home side and spectators, who had all enjoyed a great game of Shinty on a fine Saturday afternoon. The Kinlochbervie Camanachd players will travel up to Bettyhill for a return match with Farr in the New Year.
