Wick v KLB Match Report
24 March 2009

Kinlochbervie Camanachd’s young players had an early start last Saturday when they travelled to Wick for their return match in the shinty Far North League. Team captain Taylor Mackay, 15 and full forward Oliver Taveras, 15, had to sit this game out as KLB were playing only pupils aged 14 or under to match the ages of the Wick side.

The game got off to a sticky start with the players from both sides having to get used to the strong wind and the uneven playing surface which made the ball direction un-predictable. The KLB players adapted quickly and soon took control of the match with Donald Mackay opening the scoring, quickly followed by a second goal from Connor Munro. Rolling subs was the order of the day and young Mark Dorrian quickly made his presence felt on the pitch, just under two minutes after coming on he took advantage of the confusion in front of the Wick goal and scored the third for KLB. Midfield player Struan Kish then made a run through the defence taking the score to 4-0 to the away side. Wick, down but not defeated, were showing some great hitting skills and got the ball forward where Douglas Webster was waiting, he quickly netted the ball and took a goal back for the home side. KLB captain for the match, Nathan Kish won the ball at the throw up and passed the ball to Donald Mackay who scored his second of the day. Struan Kish, not to be outdone, scored another two goals giving him a hat trick and taking the score at half time to 7-1 for KLB.
The second half showed a much more determined Wick side, who commanded more ball possession and fight but still couldn’t keep back the KLB onslaught or quite get through the strong defence. Donald Mackay showed some excellent shinty skills and gave KLB another 2 goals on their score sheet, taking his tally to 4. Andrew Nicholson then took back some home pride and scored the second goal for Wick. Mark Dorrian then took his goal tally to two, with KLB Captain for the match, Nathan Kish finishing the scoring at 11-2 in KLB’s favour. A great game was had by all and all involved should be proud of their performance and their part in keeping this new resurgence of shinty alive in the North. Many thanks to Robbie MacIntosh for refereeing the match.
