Deveronside v Inverness City FC
Saturday 7th March 2009
Scotscoup League Division 2
City make another step towards the league title. There is a possibility of Inverness City FC being the only highland capital team who might bring home some silverware this year. Co-manager Mike Pollard said “The boys again showed they are really wanting this title. We’ve travelled to one of the hardest places to get a result and came away with three points. With the boys now unbeaten since November this now shows that the hard work is paying off. We always look to improve and credit must be given to the whole squad as they really deserve it.”
This game was a hard fought occasion but City found they had plenty of possession even though they didn’t have much to show for it. The closest chances in the first half fell to Gary Miller and Colin Mason with both of them unable to find the back of the net. City had to wait until the 61st minute when McNiven put Maclennan through to smash the ball in to the roof of the net to score the only goal of the game.
City battled hard and even though Deveronside pushed forward, the outstanding City defence stood fast. With the combination of City’s defence and some sensational goal keeping by Ian Young, City finished victorious. Final score Deveronside 0 City 1.
Pollard said “With the next two weeks being home games, we are hoping we will get a good support as the boys need that little help and having a good crowd to cheer them on will be like having twelve men on the pitch.”
Team: Young, MacDonald, Allan, D Beaton, K Fraser, C Mason (Mapplebeck 81), J Fraser, Miller, Maclennan, Turner (Sanderson 75), McNiven (Pearce 68).
Subs not used: Murdoch, P Beaton
