InvernessCity v Golspie
Football Times Cup
Saturday 26th April 2008

City’s last chance of silver ware came to an end this Saturday in the Football Times Cup. After the last meeting between these two teams there wasn’t much to separate them. City started the more brightly and looked hungrier. In a game which had very few chances but plenty of talking points. In the 19th minute Colin Mason found himself on the edge of the box only to drive his shot over the bar. City were looking the more dangerous but were unable to find the killer pass in the last third of the pitch. A minute later Golspie were award a free kick in a dangerous position but wasted this chance. With almost fifteen minutes of the first half left a major turning point in the game came when ruckus between the two sides started a Pearce was wrongly singled out and sent off, even though the culprits of the incident walked away unpunished. City’s ten men still battled on and were showing they weren’t given up this trophy without a fight. One minute before half time a Golspie were awarded a controversial penalty which Kerr superbly saved to keep the score at half time City 0, Golspie 0.

With an up hill battle City came out determined not to let there home support down, city carried on battling away. City’s defence could only last for so long when Golspie got the luck of the bounce and slotted the ball past the on coming Kerr, City 0, Golspie 1.With 10 man City soaking up the pressure and then trying to catch Golspie on the break but it was Golspie who again got the good fortune when the ball was clearly handled but play was waved on for Golspie to carry on and score to make the score City 0, Golspie 2. City were tied and unable to put any type of attack on and after a while saw the game slip away from them. The final score City 0, Golspie 2.

Managers Thoughts
We are bitterly disappointed with the end to our season but that’s football. We feel hard done to again but quite often decisions sometimes go for you and sometimes they don’t. We have been badly hit with injuries this last month but we must not use this as an excuse as we still felt we could still do the job. As our players have had this pointed out to them we are building for next season and now know we can compete with the top teams in the league all we have to do now is find that little extra to beat them. We have one more game which will be away to Golspie, this not a nothing game to us as we can still finish second.
