CITY TITLE CHALLENGE STILL ALIVE

INVERNESS City’s hopes of promotion are still alive thanks to a last minute penalty winner away to Burghead at the weekend.

Co-manager Mike Pollard asked his team for an improved performance following last weekend’s disappointing draw at Fochabers and the players delivered, albeit in the dying stages of the game.

Pollard said: “As a manager you have to be happy with such an improved performance. We asked the lads to show more heart and desire and they certainly delivered.

“If you are serious about winning the league then you have to take three points from difficult matches on your travels.

“We will need another performance like that away to Deveronside this week to keep the momentum going.”

It was apparent that both sides had title aspirations from the word go as the match opened in fast and furious fashion.

The first opportunity fell to City in 15 minutes. Stuart Pearce latched onto Michael Turner’s rebounded free kick, but his shot flew just over.

The game burst into life on the half hour mark and it was a goal of supreme quality from Nile McNiven. His shot with the outside of his foot flew into the top corner, leaving the keeper helpless.

The game became bogged down in midfield after the opener and it wasn’t until the 58th minute that the home side drew level thanks to a penalty, which was duly converted.

Five minutes later Kevin Fraser stung the hands of the Burghead keeper with the thunderous drive.

The visitors maintained their desire and belief that they could force a winner and in 86 minutes Gary Miller was taken down inside the area and the referee pointed to the spot.

Experienced former Caley Thistle defender Jordan MacDonald kept his cool to fire home the winner for City from the spot.
