MISERABLE SCORELINE FOR CITY TO MATCH CONDITIONS

INVERNESS City's famous battling qualities were not quite enough to see them take something from Saturday's visit by New Elgin.

Despite coming back from 1-3 down the home side sank to their second successive league defeat in as many weeks.

City co-manager Mike Pollard said whilst he was disappointed not to have taken something from the game because of the way his side fought their way back he admitted defensive frailties cost his side once again.

He said: "I was disappointed losing the game after such a spirited fightback, but the awful conditions did not help, coupled with the fact we didn't defend well as a team.

"This is something myself and Stevie will have to work on. Sometimes you just have to take these kinds of results on the chin and make sure your preparation is better next time out."

He added: "Next week we travel to Blackburn Utd in the Scottish Junior Cup and we will have to be at our best to progress to the next round."

The visitors started Saturday's league clash in positive fashion and carved out a couple of early chances. Then on the 10 minute mark a lucky deflection put the visitors into the lead their bright start merited.

Five minutes later Keith Mason's effort was comfortably saved by the New Elgin keeper. The City support were able to warm their hands with applause in 20 minutes when City hauled themselves back into the game. Graeme Stewart made his way to the byline and his cutback across goal was fired home by Bruce McCraw.

Both sides squandered decent chances to take the lead before the break. Only 2 minutes after the re-start a long ball caught the City defence napping and the Elgin striker latched onto the ball to fire past the helpless Michael Kerr in the City goal.

It got worse for City in 53 minutes when New Elgin caught them on the break to make the scoreline 1-3.

But City were only behind for 10 minutes when substitute Stevie Sanderson found Keith Mason and he smashed the ball high into Elgin's net to reduce the deficit.

Ten minutes from time City must have thought they had completed yet another famous comeback when Stewart reacted quickest to tap home after Kevin Fraser's initial shot stopped in the mud.

But City were again caught on the break in 83 minutes by the visitors whose fourth goal proved to be the winner.
