MATCH REPORTS

V DEVERONSIDE 18 OCTOBER 2008

by Stevie Graham - Co-manager - 12:38 on 20 October 2008
City were left licking there wounds after another heavy defeat on there travels to Banff with the Homesters running out convincing 5-2 winners, City had the chance to go top of the league with a win but any thoughts of this happening were quickly dispelled as Deveronside fired 3 quick goals in succession to blast City away the 1st was a beauty by the Home team when they picked up a miscued clearance from Colin Mason and drifted forward before unleashing a 20 yd shot straight into the top right corner in the 20th min, 3 mins later worse followed for City when David Beaton crazily fouled in the box to give away a penalty which Kerr in the City goal saved but was unable to get to the rebound and it was dispatched into the back of the net to make it 2-0, City had lost all coolness by now and were made to pay again by slack defending when Jamie Fraser miscued a pass it fell kindly to a Deveronside player who quickly released his team mate to run on in goal a despatch the ball past Kerr to make it 3 nil, Deveronside put themselves under pressure when they lost a player when the Referee sent him off for a remark to him! This could have cost the Banffsters dear as City pulled one back in the 40th min when Graeme Stewart drifted in from the right wing and beat a couple of defenders before slottling one home to make it 3-1, Just on Half time City almost scored again when Sanderson run through on goal but some great defensive play kept City at bay half time deveronside 3 city 1 City tried to get back into the game straight after the restart however Deveronside always threatened on the counter and were coping easily with any City attacks into there box, And it was on the counter that the ten men of Deveronside went further ahead when they broke upfield and forced Kerr of his goalline to block the attack the rebound fell kindly to the Home team who shot again only to find Kerr managing to block the hit again but luck wasn't on Citys side as it again fell kindly to a Home player whose shot seemed to be going wide but deflect of the unfortunate Kerr which helped the ball fall into the back of the net, Inverness were down but to there credit did not give up and scored through Sanderson late on when a great through ball on the 85th minute by Mapplebeck fell to Sanderson who rifled the ball home, City could have immediately pulled another back but Sanderson shot wide and again this cost City dear as Deveronside had the last word in the game when they broke away again and scored with a fine finish to end the game 5-2 and strenghten there position at the top.

We went into this game in great shape with good victories over some good sides and had a chance to move into the top postion howvever I don't know how we describe our defending at the present but we really need to have a look at this as it is not acceptable or good enough we all as a squad are hurting after this credit to Deveronside as they were hungry and wanted it and they way they celebrated after the game showed they wanted it so we have to take it on the chin as we have a huge game this weekend against New Elgin who have done really well lately and will be up there fighting for the league.
The boys will pick themselves up put it will be a long week for all but we have to accept the defeat and move on from it.
