CITY HIT FOCHABERS FOR SIX IN LEAGUE OPENER

INVERNESS City fired a warning to their junior opponents with a six-goal demolition of experienced Division 2 outfit Fochabers in the opening league match of the season.

The men from the Highland capital were keen to build on their encouraging Grill League Cup campaign as the Scotscoup League Division 2 kicked off at North Kessock on Saturday.

A bumper crowd were there to see goals from Gary Miller, a brace from Michael Turner and strikes from Keith Mason, David Beaton and Stuart Pearce.

That victory was enough to send City to the Division 2 summit after matchday one.

City co-manager Mike Pollard said: "In all my time managing these players I have never seen them play so well. It would not have mattered who we were playing today most teams would have struggled to stay with us in that kind of form.

"I was particularly pleased with our passing and movement and now we have to maintain that level throughout the season.

"However, we all know that we are only as good as our last game and this result will count for nothing when he go to Whitehills next weekend."

City went for the jugular from the start creating their first opening in just 2 minutes. Stevie Sanderson stole the ball from the defender outside the area, but after weaving his way into the area could only fire straight at the keeper.

In 15 minutes a Miller free-kick from the left was headed goalwards by Jamie Fraser, but his effort was well saved by the keeper.

Three minutes later the home side did take the lead and it came thanks to some quick thinking by Miller. The keeper was still trying to sort out his wall when the pint-sized winger bent the ball round the defence and into the bottom left corner.

Then on 21 minutes Michael Turner produced another dipping free-kick, which this time nestled in the bottom right corner of the net.

In 34 minutes Graham Stewart's reverse pass into the area was met by the run of Turner and he cleverly slotted past the keeper to make it 3-0. City continued to dominate the first period and squandered another hatful of chances to extend their lead before the break.

It was a similar story after the re-start with the home side creating numerous chances to extend their lead. But in 78 minutes City did add the fourth their play merited. Miller sent the ball in from the left and Keith Mason volleyed the ball home from point blank range.

The crowd were then treated to a sight as rare as Halley's Comet in 80 minutes, a David Beaton goal. The broke to the marauding defender on the edge of the area and his thunderous shot took a slight deflection before finding the back of the net.
City completed the rout in 84 minutes when Pearce picked the ball up on the left side of the area, beat two men and curled the ball expertly into the bottom right corner.
