Raigmore Has New 3-D Heart Scanner
13 September 2014

The two scans on the left are conventional B&W ultrasound images, whilst the one on the right is a 3-D image of a heart using the new equipment.

Cardiologists at Raigmore Hospital are now able to use a new state-of-the-art 3-D scanner of patients’ hearts.
Previously, they had to rely on two-dimensional images to help with their diagnosis but this new equipment allows them a much clearer three-dimensional view of the heart.

Dr Peter Clarkson one of the consultant cardiologists said:-  “It is a big step forward in the diagnoses of patients with heart conditions.    The results were spectacularly clear, much better than would have been available to us previously.”

The new equipment, developed by GE Healthcare, cost a total of £250,000, money which had been allocated under NHS Highland’s capital programme, and replaces the hospital’s eight-year-old ultrasound equipment.
