It was the ancients who first associated the heart with our emotions and feelings, and even to this day that romantic cardiocentric connection still remains.

Heartbreaker

The death was announced on Sunday 20th May of singer Robin Gibb, who with brothers Barry and Maurice formed the Bee Gees.  They not only helped define the disco era but also wrote wonderful smash hit songs for some of the biggest names in showbusiness.

Heartbreaker written specially for Dionne Warwick must surely be one of their best.

Listen To Your Heart

A nice middle-of-the-road easy-listening piece.

 'Listen To Your Heart' is an inspirational piece written for piano and orchestra by the talanted Mike Rowland.    It is the soundtrack for an upcoming environmental documentary by the Czech filmakers Ruedi & Priska Abbühl.

- besides it has lots of penguins, and I just love penguins.

Mon Coeur S'ouvre A Ta Voix

'Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix' from Camille Saint-Saëns's opera Samson and Delilah, known in English as 'Softly Awakes My Heart'.

Although written for a mezzo-soprano this recording is by the worlds greatest ever soprano, the superlative Maria Callas.

The aria opens with the words...
"Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix,
comme s'ouvrent les fleurs aux baisers de l'aurore!"

In English -

"My heart opens to your voice,
Like the flowers open to the kisses of the dawn!"

... beautiful, so beautiful.

What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted

A change of pace here, as Joan Osborne, an outstanding singer in her own right, fronts for an ad-hoc session by the Funk Brothers.
It is to the Funk Brothers that I would ask you to pay particular attention, they are a group of session musicians who between them have played on more No1 hits, on more gold records than any artist, from the early sixties to the present day.  Naturally they are now all getting on a bit in years, the oldest is 86 and the youngest is Bob Babbit the bass player at a youthful 67 - but just listen to the music these 'old guys' can still produce when thrown together in a BBC studio.

Sadly, since this recording a couple of the Funk Brothers have passed away, one with a heart condition.
