The Stethescope

We are all very familiar with the basic tool of the doctor's trade - the stethescope.
Todays doctors can be seen with their stethescope slung round their neck as if their stethescope was some form of identity necklace to remind them who and what they are.

But did you know
... that the stethoscope was invented by a Frenchman, René Laennec in 1816 when he was working at the Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital in Paris.

Laennec's invention was very much born out of necessity.
He was consulted by a young woman who presented with the symptoms of heart disease.
Now, this young lady was rather well endowed and the traditional method of listening to heart sounds by placing the ear on the patients chest seemed inappropriate to him on this occassion, so he invented the stethescope.

Heart - Its All In A Name

The existence of the organ we now know as the heart was known to the ancient Greeks, who gave it the name kardia.
Over time the hard 'k' sound changed to a softer 'c' sound, which can still be found in such modern words as 'cardiac' and 'tachycardia'
.

The Romans modified the word kardia or cardia to cor, and can be found in such words as 'cordial' as in a 'cordial greeting' ie a heartfelt greeting.  Or, as in 'cor pulmonale' the medical condition which is failure of the right side of the heart.

The word heart which we all now use came from much colder northern climes.
It comes from the old Teutonic word herton, which in turn evolved into the medieval Germanic word heorte, which is only a short step to the modern English word heart

Thats about 100,000 beats per day.
This equates to 35,000,000 (35 million) beats per year.
Which gives us a staggering 2,500,000,000 (2.5 billion) beats over our alloted three score years and ten.
