Pioneering Vagal Stimulation Device
02 December 2012

The first person to undergo a pioneering new medical technique aimed at improving the life expectancy of patients with heart failure is making good progress.

Doctors in Liverpool fitted a new style pacemaker-like device which stimulates the vagal nerve in the neck of the heart failure patient in the hope of reducing the size of the enlarged heart.

Doctors are impressed with the results so far.

Dr Wright, Consultant Cardiologist at Liverpool, said
“The study will look at whether we can slow the progression of heart failure by stimulating the vagus nerve. This is a first in-man study and if successful, will improve the quality of life for heart failure patients in the UK.”
