Eplerenone Indications Widened
10 July 2012

For a number of hear failure patients meeting certain specific criteria, the addition of an aldosterone antagonist (potassium sparing water tablet) such as spironolactone or eplerenone can be required to get rid of any excess fluid and ease breathlessness.

Now the Scottish Medicines Consortium, which oversees the use of medicines, has broadened the indications where eplerenone may be used, so it may be made available to more heart failure patients.

Now more and more heart failure patients may benefit from having eplerenone added to their medicines.

John McMurray, Professor of Medical Cardiology at Glasgow University, said:
“We must continue to do what we can ... to reduce the daily impact of the disease on those patients with established illness through optimal management."
