Heart Cells

A new study makes advances in the quest to repair damaged hearts.

The study, published in the European Heart Journal, took skin cells from heart failure patients and re-programmed them to become stem cells capable of becoming normal beating heart muscle. They were then shown to be able to integrate with existing heart tissue.

Dr Mike Knapton, the BHF's Associate Medical Director, said:
“This is an important step towards developing a new treatment for over 750,000 people in the UK struggling to live their lives with heart failure. However, we still have a way to go before these findings could be applied in the clinic."
