Heart Scan Could Replace Angiogram
13 September 2011

A team of researchers, with funding from the BHF, have shown that a heart test using a magnetic scanner could help some patients living with heart failure.

Professor Peter Weissberg, BHF Medical Director said; "an important question is whether or not they [the patient] have underlying coronary artery disease. Until now this question could only be answered by a test called an angiogram, which uses x-rays and can cause complications and discomfort for the patient. This shows that we can get the same information from a simple magnetic resonance scan. The discovery means that some patients may no longer need to undergo an angiogram, so this research could have a big impact on the way thousands of patients are tested in the future.”
