End of an era

by John - 21:11 on 21 September 2011

It has just been announced that after ninety years of continuous production McCowans famous 'Highland Toffee' has gone into administration.

For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed a block of that delicious Highland Toffee confection.
Sadly with the advancing years there has come a decline in my dental capacity and an ever advancing case of hypodontia (loss of teeth).
Perhaps this is the case for an entire genaration hence the demise of McCowans' Highland Toffee.

My relations with this producrt started many, many years ago when I was but a wee laddie in shorts.    At the weekend I would visit my grandparents where one of my chores was to bring in the sticks and the coal.    For this task I was rewarded with a 'wooden thrupenny' by my grandfather.   Just the price of a large bar of McCowans Highland Toffee.

(For the sake of our younger readers a 'wooden thrupenny' was the name for a threepenny piece, the old brass 3d coin, equivalent to about 1.25p in new money)
