For family reasons, and the fact that I was in Civil Defence, I was not able to volunteer for the Service, and I had to be content with the money-raising side. This is how my District E in Darlington achieved their £110-12-6:-

How we earned our money for G.I.S.
£110-12-6 is the amount raised to date by District E
£110 by Guiders and Guides, and 12/6 by Geneva Rd Brownies
Aycliffe Company, with only 15 Guides( a village company adopted for the duration of the War) heads the list with £40 = £2-13-4 per head
St Cuthbert's Company follows with £17-6-0 = 8/83/4 per head.
We have worked hard, for we know that the GIS is a great cause, and we feel that those who are not able to volunteer for service should do all they can to support those who can.
This is how we earned our money:-
First come the Bring and Buy sales:-
Our Guides served morning coffee and afternoon tea at their all day
sale, and made 06-10-0
Aycliffe had two sales and made £35
St Luke's and East Rd also sold goods.
St Cuthbert's took the Little Theatre for a night and ran a variety show.
Heighington village company (also adopted) had a jumble sale
East Rd went carol singing, and Geneva Rd made toys.
Guides took babies and dogs for walks, gathered and sold firewood, and held guessing competitions. They also gathered hips for W.V.S, and one company gathered 1041/2 lbs.
Gardens were tidied and lawns cut, messages run and dinners cooked.
One Guider even delivers the village telegrams at 2d a time!
Numbers of toys have been made and sold, and East Rd's fireside brushes brought in £1-10-0.
