Although the withdrawal of the last volunteer, Gwen Hesketh from Tasmania* . did not happen until 1952, up until 1950, 243 women and 55 men had served abroad and the Committee had met in London 99 times!!
Much thought was given to the training programme. Volunteers were recommended by their counties and then at intervals were asked to attend meetings and treks. The Scout trek-cart scheme was adopted in the early years, and Guiders and Rangers over the age of 21 went off into the wilds for days on end, stopping at intervals to cope with emergencies of all kinds.
Madame Malkowska had said to the trainers- two of whom were attached to each team - that the Trainees must learn to improvise and to 'make do', lots of practice in this is needed. Work them when they are hungry or thirsty or suffering from lack of sleep! They must learn that when they think they can do no more - they can!"
This was true, and I personally am grateful for the GIS training. It was wonderful, and stretched one a lot.
To the trainers - "Get to know your volunteers, so that you can send out balanced teams. Individuals react differently to stress - some are at their best in an emergency. No 'ifs' or 'buts'. It is no good saying "I don't mind what I do as long as I get a good night's sleep", or "I can't bear the sight of blood!"
