Hive Maintenance
The Modified Dadant (MD) Beehive is an excellent hive for the Commercial Honey-farmer. However, despite the durability of the Redwood Cedar it is constructed from, its various parts still require routine maintenance and care.
Above, Mr Field at work cleaning and repairing hive-rooves. These really do get the brunt of all weather, and need to be in perfect working order to ensure the bees remain warm through the winter months.

Below, cleaning and checking the Queen Excluder screens, inserted into the hives during the honey harvesting periods, to prevent the Queen from entering the Supers and laying eggs in amongst the honey cells.
Wax that has been formed on the Excluders is scraped off the screens and collected in the drum, where it can be melted down and recycled.
