Single life doesn’t have
to be dull!
BEING single again can be a difficult and traumatic time.
Mistrust, loneliness, a lack of confidence and self-sorrow are common feelings which prevent singletons from taking that step out and seeing people again after they have lost a partner.
But the group behind a well-attended social club are urging them to join in for enjoyable evenings and a chance to make new friends.
Deeping and Peterborough Phoenix Friendship Club, the local branch of the National Council for the Divorced, Separated and Widowed (NCDSW Friendship Clubs), opened in July 2009.
The main aim of the NCDSW Friendship Club is to bring together men and women who all have one thing in common in that they are unexpectedly single again or want to make new friends and that also now includes married couples who would like an evening out and to enjoy the company of others, they must attend together and hold a joint membership which means that they have to attend together so that there is no marital conflict.
Members believe that the NCDSW Friendship Club title is an advantage over other clubs, where people have no idea of each others’ status.
The thriving club, which meets every Thursday night at 8pm at the Deeping Sports & Social Club, Outgang Road, Market Deeping, has nearly 60 members and is non-profit making.
The mix of ages might raise a few eyebrows from outsiders, there tends to be a mix from late 30s to retirement age, and it works surprisingly well.
It’s quite refreshing to see that most of the tables are occupied, something you don’t see very often at clubs, but we want to see it full.
Safeguarding those members is one of the most important aspects of the club, and each potential new person must fill out an application form alongside proof of single or marital status.
This information – kept confidential under the data protection act – could include a death certificate, divorce papers, a solicitor’s letter confirming legal separation or a Council Tax Bill showing the 25% discount as a single occupant of the property where you reside or a marriage certificate.
The NCDSW has been in operation for more than 40 years now, and there are now branches all over the UK.
Annual membership costs £5 per year for a single person and £10.00 for a married couple, and the ongoing normal entry fee is £5.00 per night unless stated otherwise in the Forthcoming Events section.
