Casey

Casey's Golden Charm
(Mistboys Black Hector x Mistboys Jazz)
17/09/1995 – 22/11/09

After losing Jessie, I couldn’t even look at another German Shepherd, however after a few months, I got to the stage where I couldn’t live without one.  I went back to the same place I got Jessie from as she had been such a super dog and eventually got Casey.  I wasn’t expecting a physical resemblance, but they were very similar in looks.

Casey was a bit more nervous around people than Jessie had been, this meant that when we were competing in obedience shows, she kept turning round to look at the steward or judge who was following her.   She did however excel at agility and really seemed to love it and it took her mind off all the people around her and so we concentrated on that.  Eventually she overcame her nervousness completely and became a bold outgoing girl.  She was never very fast in agility, but she was always very accurate and so switched on to me that if I sent her the wrong way and then realised my mistake, she would turn on a sixpence to correct herself – she got me out of many a scrape.  She has won many rosettes and places in her time, including winning me out of Starters.

Casey had a little go at running in harness with Kodi and Nico and quite enjoyed it.  She also appeared on TV in the Bill and the pilot of Red Cap.  Casey retired from Agility in 2004 after an incident at a show.  She went under the final jump, something she never did, when I came out, someone told me she had slipped in the mud just before the jump.  During the next course she was jumping slower and more carefully and when we got to a mud patch, refused to jump any more.

Following on from that her back legs started getting bad, in the beginning I thought it was CDRM, but later wondered if she had put her back out when she slipped at the show.   By the time she got to 12.5 years she was still on her feet running around and still only looking about 10.  She started to find it hard to get upstairs, but she refused to stay downstairs, her happiness was most important to me so if she wanted to come up - she came up - she would stop when she was ready.  Even though she couldn't keep up with the younger dogs when chasing balls, right up to the day before she passed away, she still loved to run with them and if they lost concentration for one second, she had that ball....  Jade's pups also helped to "keep her young", she had old dog grumpy moments, but would also play with them too.  She also got about 30ml of Colloidal Silver a day to help her old immune system stay fit and healthy and keep infections at bay.  Casey passed away at home, she had been very quiet all day and I had decided to take her to the vets the following morning, we all stayed downstairs with her that night and she passed in the morning just as I let the other dogs out.  She is the only dog to have passed naturally at home surrounded by her family and that means the world to me.
