Gizmo

2004 - 2011

Not long after I lost Silver, I moved up to Scotland.  Despite the company and activity with the dogs, I missed having a cat around and following an advert in the local pet shop, I got Gizmo.  Gizzy is a small cat and was a tiny kitten.  It must have been terrifying for her to come in to a house with 4 big dogs (Kodi, Casey, Gipsy and Star), so to help her get adjusted, they were not allowed to go near her.  By the third day, she was so comfortable with them she was going up to them and initiating play.  They were told to be gentle and they were, growing up with Silver around they were very cat friendly in the house.

Coming in to a house with 4 dogs, she is much more dog like than cat like, that said, when you get her toys out, her cat instincts come out in force and she is very quick.  Luckily she doesn't catch many birds when she is out, however being surrounded by fields, she does manage to catch mice and voles occasionally, the trouble is she brings them into the garden to eat and if the dogs are out, they steal them from her!!  When she is out, she is usually not too far away and if she is nearby always comes in if I call her.  It is quite amusing to see her at the far end of the field and call her like you would a dog and see her come haring across the field to you.  I often say she has a better recall than the dogs!  Gizmo is a very loving cat and loves to sleep on your lap with her feet stretched out in front, she "kisses" like a dog and if one of them comes up to us while she is on my lap, she gives them a good grooming.  Her favourite dog to groom was Star, who used to come over just for a wash and would stand or lie there with a blissful look on her face as Giz puts a paw on either side of her face and proceeded to wash.  Since losing Star, Gizzy has turned her grooming attentions to Rio who does not like it as much as Star did, but has learned to tolerate it.

Sadly I lost Gizmo in June 2011, in the space of a couple of minutes, the dogs must have caught her mid run and grabbed her, it was an accident, they don't know the strength of their mouths, their wasn't a mark on her and they knew something was wrong.  I don't blame them but needless to say I was devastated, she was such a loving homely cat and the dogs all loved her.  I miss her dearly and even a year later her bed is still in its place and I have only just removed her litter tray and bowls!!
