Attractions

Renowned for its regal connections, Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms is the home of Balmoral Castle, Royal Lochnagar Distillery and Crathie Kirk, all of which have attracted Kings and Queens for several centuries.

Delve deep into the area’s historical roots as you travel around Scotland’s castle country. Visit the spots that inspired Byron’s poem Dark Lochnagar, this was put to music by Beethoven and is thought to have encouraged Queen Victoria to purchase Balmoral and Lochnagar. The architecture which can still be seen today in the towns and villages of Banchory, Aboyne, Ballater and Braemar are reminiscent of the Victoria era and a timeless reminder of her love of Royal Deeside.

Royal Deeside’s majesty doesn’t end there; its dramatic panoramic landscapes are a feast for the senses and just waiting to be explored. Whether it is by two legs, four wheels or from the sky, there are a wealth of activities which can be enjoyed in this unspoilt natural environment.

Head off-road on a guided tour of the Glen Tanar Estate, part of the Cairngorm National Park and a site of special scientific interest, and get up close to rare species of animals – a picture perfect spot, this area is a must for keen photographers. Or for those who prefer a slower pace, take to the hills on a guided walk with Walk Deeside and find out more about the various organisms that inhabit Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms.
