Storms & Ski-doos

by Simon - 15:43 on 09 August 2008

Our pay structure allows us to receive a fuel bonus as long as certain criteria is met,  one of those is an overidle of the truck about 5% ie running the truck while stationery unfortunately when you wake up its 30 degrees its only 2am the last thing on your mind is the fuel bonus as you fire up the truck and put the air con on full blast and try and get some kip.

The qualcom comunication device had no life in it untill midday when it gave a bleep and a load assignment for me.  Load 2 empty containers 5minutes from my location and deliver in Pointe Claire near Montreal.  Just the loads I like from the moment I pulled in the gate until I pulled out 20 minutes later.  I hit the I 95 north going like blazes, well ok, blazes for a big freight truck, 96 kmh, I swear old grannies pass us and give us the bird for going so slow!

Didn't fancy going through New York on the 95 so came off and used the I 278 on to the I87 north.  Montreal is a busy place even at 1am the rds still had a lot of traffic on them.  The receiver had a parking spot so parked there over night.

In the morning I was only there 15 minutes, doesn't always work out like that but I wish it did.  My reload was coming out of Valcourt, a load of ski-doos for Winnipeg, they don't take long to load either, its just a shit of a road getting there.  Coming through Ottawa there was a hell of a thunder storm, visibility was reduced to only a few feet, what makes it worse is the skateboards (cars and 4x4s) in these conditions have a tendancy to just stop.

I realise that its difficult when the weather is so bad but maybe if they put the air con off turned on a gentle heat to the windscreens the windows wouldn't mist up.  In those conditions now, I get out on the overtaking lane, the good thing is that you soon drive through the worst of it in a few minutes.

A skateboard is trucker talk refering to a car or bloody 4 wheelers as they are affectionately called in Canada!!!
