Major works to improve the A19/A174 Parkway Interchange are due to commence on Monday 19 May 2014. The Highways Agency is leading on the delivery of scheme, which has been developed in partnership with Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Councils, with works funded by the Department for Transport. The scheme will increase the capacity of the junction and reduce delays, particularly during the morning and evening peak periods.
The scheme comprises the following elements:
Widening of the southern and western quadrants of the roundabout to three lanes;
Widening of the eastbound carriageway of the A174 Parkway to three lanes between the A19 and Stainton Interchange (B1380 Low Lane); and
Dualling of the A174 Parkway Extension between the A19 and the new roundabout serving Teesside Industrial Estate in Thornaby.
Works are programmed for completion by the end of 2014.
The A174 Parkway Extension will be closed to traffic from 8 pm on Wednesday 21 May to 6 am on Thursday 22 May 2014 whilst narrow running lanes and temporary safety barriers are installed. Eastbound traffic will be diverted via A1044 Thornaby Road, Trenchard Avenue, Mitchell Avenue, A1130 Acklam Road and A19 (southbound). Westbound traffic will be diverted via A174 Parkway (eastbound), B1380 Low Lane and A1044 Thornaby Road.
The A174 Parkway will be closed to eastbound traffic between the A19 and the A1032 Blue Bell Interchange from 8 pm on Thursday 22 May to 6 am on Friday 23 May 2014 whilst narrow running lanes and temporary safety barriers are installed. Traffic will be diverted via A19 (northbound), A1130 Mandale Road, A1032 Acklam Road and B1380 Ladgate Lane whilst the closure is in operation.
Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the travelling public, although minor delays are expected whilst the temporary closures are in operation.
The detailed Traffic Management Plan for the remainder of the contract is currently being finalised. Further details will follow in due course.
