First Frost…… Following In The Footsteps…..

by Bernie Bell - 09:30 on 12 November 2025

First Frost

I fluff up my nest
and my graying fur,
ignore my doctors
put on a few pounds,
fill the freezer
with Impossible burgers
and microwave burritos.

Night freezes the birdbath,
so I lock my doors,
secure the shutters
but leave one candle
burning in a window
so solitary travelers
know the world hasn't gone

completely dark.

“A few days ago, EXARC member Markus Klek completed the second half of a Stone Age expedition through the high alpine terrain of the Ötztal mountains in South Tyrol.

Together with a group of four reenactors, he explored patterns of early Holocene alpine travel. Over the course of seven days, the team retraced parts of the Iceman’s journey, moving from the Vinschgau Valley across the Tisenjoch at 3,200 meters and back down into the Schnalstal.

Along the way, they reached the discovery site of the ice mummy, found in 1991, and documented additional Mesolithic and Neolithic archaeological locations in the surrounding mountains.

What was Ötzi doing up there? Listen to Markus' adventure in our latest podcast episode: https://lnkd.in/dHgZveM9
