From ‘Emergence’ Magazine…

When You Could Hear the Trees

by Kerri ní Dochartaigh

The world outside became more unsettled, unsettling, by the day. The only thing that soothed me was the wind working through the trees.”

“The crises changing our world are changing motherhood, too. Gray whales, who gestate their calves for almost a year and swim alongside them for another eight months, are having to adapt to changes in the food chain as sea ice diminishes in the Arctic. With spring arriving earlier each year, songbirds in North America are having trouble shifting their breeding timelines, making it harder for them to match the emergence of their hatchlings to the availability of food and warmth. In China, the disappearance of old-growth forests means fewer old tree caves for giant pandas to den and nurse their cubs in. Across the Earth, human and more-than-human mothers alike are feeling the shifts in our collective home and, in their midst, continuing to create a sense of care and refuge for their young.

In this week’s essay, Kerri ní Dochartaigh’s experiences of pregnancy and motherhood bring her into an emerging realization of her own mammalhood. When she encounters her animal self, a creature embedded in the wild tangle of wind and trees and flowers that surround her, it transforms everything: her sense of home and safety; what it means to feel, to act, to care through the ancient, feral knowledge of instinct. Listening for teachings from the Earth, Kerri feels her way through the anguish and tenderness of raising a child in a burning and breaking—and beautiful—world.”
