Ness of Brodgar 2022 Top 10 – ongoing.….

And it’s Trench J again….

I do like a smart axe-head, or hand-axe……and the Ness has produced  some hum-dingers….

Looking back to 2012, and what I call the Sky-stone - because it reminds me of a summer sky….

I included the Sky-stone in a poem….

Thoughts about the drain, discovered at The Ness

It’s not just Sky-stones,
Carved Balls,
Painted Walls.

It’s the basics of life.

Making, Breaking.
The fragments which can say so much,
To those who pay attention.

Butchery – How?
Placement – Why?
Careful noting of the smallest detail,
Builds the picture.

The beauty matters.
Beauty, simply, does.

“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or
believe to be beautiful.”

The principle works down the ages.

Beauty, mystery, and…..practicality.

LIFE.

In 2018  Stromness Museum… https://www.stromnessmuseum.org.uk/ had two Winter exhibitions, one of which was entitled ‘From The Trowels Edge – new finds from the Ness of Brodgar’.  Part of this exhibition we entitled ‘The Year of the Axe’ -  and they did find some beauties - in particular the Banded Gneiss axe….…among others….

The look of it makes you want to hold it, and makes you want to own it.  Also, the wear on it is interesting.  One side of the blade has been re-sharpened, but not the other, which still shows signs of heavy usage.  Both sides were then used as a small anvil –  a case of  Neolithic ‘Make Do And Mend’?

Merging…..

…about …merging?

Choices….

I’m reading ‘The Screwtape Letters’ by C.S. Lewis.  A very thought-full book. Very.

Angels/Devils.  Good/Evil.  Darkness/Light.  Kindness/Bitterness.

Making choices of ways to be and live.  Making our own choices.

“O wad some Power the giftie gie us, to see oursels as ithers see us!" - Robert Burns
