Stromness Exhibitions…..Threeee Is A Magic Number….

Stromness Exhibitions…..

Mike is a Marine Biologist – I like seaweed - so this exhibition was a must….

I’m going to be guilty of blatant favouritism.

Dawn Stevens’ wrack, paint and drift-wood sculptures….

I like these very, very much….

Marine Biology Man told me how the little ’cups‘ are made – half a bladder from an egg wrack  with colour inside.

On the way home we stopped by the Bay of Hinderayre and I took a photo of some of these au naturel…

Alison Moore’s seaweed images – a group presented on a back-ground of seaweed ‘wallpaper’….

Like being in an extra-ordinary Living-room.

Individual pieces…..

My fav. by Rebecca Marr is what I see as concentric circles – I like concentric circles, spirals and all things round…

Ami Robb’s tangles….

….. remind me of the tangles of barbed wire which are often found on beaches or eroding out of the nearby banks – Orkney had many coastal war-time installations and personnel bases.  And of course – there’s the ubiquitous farming barbed wire – coastal erosion means that many fences are falling into the sea.  We scavenge the wood – avoiding the wire.

Seeing that exhibition did me good – not only seeing the work produced, but knowing that there are folk who produce such work.  In a world of ever-increasing tawdriness…. that …helps.

There are cards of some of the art-works for sale – we got some – one way of taking such wonders home with us.

Rebecca also has an online exhibition exploring Orkney’s social history relating to seaweed which came from a project supported by a Visual Art and Craft maker Award, and can be viewed at www.orkneyseaweedstories.wordpress.com

My seaweed related tuppenceworth, which includes a link to some of Rebecca’s work…

And then, on the way down the street we noticed something interesting in the Pier Arts Centre, so we had a look at ‘The Growth of New Ideas’ - The Legacy of D’Arcy Thompson in Modern and Contemporary Art.

Andy Lomas – ‘Aggregation 24/27’ ……..

I’ll quote from the PAC information card…

“…stem from D’Arcy Thompson studying organic forms and the simple mathematical rules that affect them.”

The second one reminds me of an angelica flower-head…..

Eduardo Paolozzi  - ‘Untitled’ – but the label says ‘polished bronze’ and I think that fits…..

Leopold Blaschka & Rudolf Blaschka – ‘Glass model of a starfish larva’ –

Looking through a Barbara Hepworth to Stromness Harbour….

PS

I'll quote from the OISF Programme…

“The Pier Arts Centre in Stromness is the venue to two explorations into links between mathematics and art on Saturday 9 September.

In the morning the link is through the work of a remarkable book from 1917 that continues to reverberate today. On Growth and Form by D’Arcy Thompson inspired various artists in the Pier’s permanent collection, among them Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo, and it inspired other artists whose work is featured in a visiting exhibition.

In the afternoon we look at three anniversaries that weave together the lives of a Scottish mathematician and two Scottish women painters.

We celebrate the 75th birthday of the Scottish composer Eddie McGuire with three films that provide the first public performance of all five of his astronomy-inspired compositions together in a superb combination of music and images, and stories as well.

And we travel to Stronsay in a new specially-made film that links Orkney past and present with the story of the ages of ice and their aftermath.””

Threeeee Is A Magic Number….

On the way home…… stopped by the Bay of Hinderayre to find that the third tower has been completed….and Bradford has gone home…

Walking towards the old Kirkyard….

End on…..

Looking back…….

……leaving a bit of Swiss creativity on an Orkney beach.

What a day we had!
