‘The Best Laid Plans’…… Good Neighbours….Structure Twenty-seven…..

‘The Best Laid Plans…’

We watched a television programme about Emperor Hadrian (of ‘Wall’ fame), presented by Dan Snow.  He told of how the pillars at the front of the Pantheon ….

…having been quarried in and brought all the way from Egypt, turned out to be 10ft too short and so, as long as it stands, the front of the Pantheon will not be as Hadrian meant it to be.

You’d think that would have made Hadrian pause for thought about his excessive ‘showing off’ - because that’s what it comes down to – he was a big, sad, lonely show-off.

What has he left behind but a lot of big buildings and a reputation for cruelty?

I hope that he’s finding his way now.

Good Neighbours…

…good eggs!

Our neighbour called by with the biggest hen’s egg we’ve ever seen.  There must have been some ‘cluckings’ going on when that was laid!

Mike had it for breakfast - it turned out to be a double-yolker – and tasty too – their hens have a good life.

This reminds me of when I worked in the library at the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, Slimbridge.  A visiting student came in and asked me what was wrong with English eggs.

He'd bought some eggs - cheap as he could get, being a student - and when he broke them into a frying-pan, they went to nothing - slimey liquid.  I explained about battery hens - which don't exist in his home-land - and advised him to buy free-range.  He had the same complaint about chicken - it was watery mush. I offered him the same solution.

Our neighbours also have turkeys.  One of the hen turkeys has gone broody and refuses to leave the shed.  The turkey cock – who we call Mr. Boombastic….because he is – won’t leave her.  He perches on the rafters above her and won’t even come down to eat.  He has to be picked up and put by  food and water.  He pecks a bit, then he’s straight back to his perch again.  I didn’t know that turkeys are so devoted.

We’re leaving the car outside again, as the birds have stopped nesting.  What we have now though are gangs of young starlings pooing on everything – country life!

It’s high summer here - sunshine and showers – good growing weather….
