…which  got me singing my Trench T ( Structure 27) song again………

Trench T, Trench T, Trench T, Trench T

Trench T, Trench T, Treeeeeeeeeeench Teeeeeeeeee

(Repeat – ad nauseum)

I wittered about Trench T to all and sundry…………………………………

“Re. the Ness...it's not always the glamorous finds that matter.  Trench T is a biggie……

Then, they find these important things...the new big structure, very significant stones, the roofing slab manufacturing place, and..........there's more to come.  A drain may just be a drain, but what does the presence of a drain, mean?  Drainage.....drainage matters.  Especially, maybe, if you're manufacturing something, and need drainage for run-off.

With Trench T - it's not so much the central area, the bit that used to look like Eric's home made guitar, it's as they spread out, in that area, that's where things are going to turn up - where things are turning up!  It's outside the main 'enclosure', an area for workshops, manufacture ( or slaughter) which may also have been used after the main, central enclosed area was de-commissioned.  Maybe....”

Eric’s home-made guitar?.....

Excerpts From Orkney.com …….

“Orkney’s archaeologists are already in action at a number of exciting excavations across the islands, and you can pay them a visit over the coming months. Four digs, including the Ness of Brodgar, which opens on July 5, are being uncovered this year, ranging from Neolithic structures and Iron Age brochs, to Viking drinking halls and 19th century farmsteads. As always, the experts will be hoping to discover more secrets at each site, but they’re also happy to take time to show visitors around and give you a glimpse into the past.

Science Festival programme announced

“What do a wizard from Kansas, a singing cowboy with a PhD in plasma physics, and an ancient Greek computer rescued from a shipwreck all have in common? They’ll all be part of the fantastically eclectic programme at the 2023 Orkney International Science Festival, which will be held here between 7-13 September. As usual there will be a wide range of activities, family events, and talks at the festival, including Orkney-born Ben Weber who will tell the story of his solo journey to the South Pole.

New products from Orkney

“The summer months are always busy for Orkney’s creative community. Our crafts makers open their doors to welcome visitors into their workshops and studios, and our food and drink producers help keep local shops, bars and restaurants well stocked. They also somehow manage to find time to create new products that could be the perfect present or souvenir from the islands. We’ve picked out some of the best new items from our Creative Orkney and Taste of Orkney members that are available to buy now.”

The Rousay Vikings!....

I’ve been following the Dig Diary for the Swandro dig this year, which has included the excavation of a potential (now proving to be so) Norse Longhouse…

https://www.swandro.co.uk/post/more-flags-even-more-kleggs

Then, we watched a recorded episode of  Alice Roberts’ telly programme  ‘Digging For Britain’ which featured the excavations at Skaill Farm, Rousay and I thought that, in one shot in particular, the floor of the Norse Hall there looks very like the one at the Swandro dig…

It could be said that one stretch of flagstone floor would look much like another - but I thought I’d mention it anyway!
