Still Diggin’…..
The dig at The Cairns is over for another year – but the dig at the Ness of Brodgar has just begun….

My tuppenceworth’s re. Trench J, as previously posted in m’blog…
“Step by step up the wall of Brodgar…..the aerial view gives a better idea of where the steps are in relation to the whole structure……
https://www.nessofbrodgar.co.uk/2022s-top-ten-steps/
And – the two sets of steps exposed so far are evenly spaced, so - might there be more to be found as the excavation continues?
Steps are such a human thing – you can picture someone walking up them to stand and look out over the wall…..
It was why I didn’t worry about the Daleks conquering Earth – they couldn’t manage the steps – then the buggers worked out how to fly.
My observations on Trench J…… https://theorkneynews.scot/2021/07/19/small-is-beautiful-2/
And this one I include because of the raised eyebrows….. http://www.spanglefish.com/berniesblog/blog.asp?blogid=15841”

The dig at Swandro continues - preparing to move to the main site again after a diversion to a Norse longhouse…

I hope the Cleg situation eases up – we refer to them as ‘Normans’ – Norman Clegg – ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ – can ya’ dig it?
If anyone is thinking that there’s a lot of archaeology in m’blog at the moment – that’s because there’s a lot of archaeology being discovered in Orkney at the moment. It’s always there…… but right now…..it’s being revealed. You can see for yourself if you visit the digs….and maybe donate to help to keep them going?

We Can Be Heroes
by Graham Smith
In the early 1980s, London nightlife blossomed and fashion, music and clubbing would never be the same again. The press dubbed these night birds the New Romantics. Graham Smith was at the centre of this creative cult. He designed its record sleeves, cultivated its graphics and captured its characters, taking extraordinary pictures throughout the period, most of which have never been reproduced before. This beautiful book is the first insider account of this uniquely creative time.

Jaki Liebezeit edited by Jono Podmore
Jaki Liebezeit is a legendary figure among musicians, best remembered as the groove and power behind the influential German band Can. Ireland's Green Larder
by Margaret Hickey
Ireland's Green Larder tells for the first time the story of food and drink in Ireland from the ancient field system of the Ceide Fields, established a thousand years before the Pyramids were built, right up to today's thriving food scene. Recipes are dotted throughout the book and there's a chapter on the Irish rituals and superstitions associated with food and drink. In no country has the contrast between feast and famine been greater than in Ireland.

The Last Landlady
by Laura Thompson
A Guardian, Spectator and Mail on Sunday Book of the Year 2018
Laura Thompson’s grandmother Violet was one of the great landladies. Born in a London pub, she became the first woman to be given a publican’s licence in her own name and, just as pubs defined her life, she seemed in many ways to embody their essence.
Part memoir, part social history, part elegy, The Last Landlady pays tribute to an extraordinary woman and the world she epitomised.
