Halloween…..Deerness Doings….

by Bernie Bell - 08:00 on 31 October 2025

Halloween…..

It’s not just one day – it’s a time of the year.

Some books which tell well of the Spirit world:

‘The Strangers’ by Matthew Manning

‘All Hallows’ Eve’ by Charles Williams

‘The Lovely Bones’ by Alice Sebold

‘The Great Divorce’ by C.S. Lewis

‘Many Lives, Many Masters’ by Dr. Brian Weiss

‘All Hallows’ Eve’ is one of the best books I’ve read about this time of year and the world of Spirit.

Charles Williams was one of the ’Inklings’ along with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.  He doesn’t get as much attention as them, but he had/has a similarly extra-ordinary mind.

I wonder where he is now?

The way I see it…

Ghosts

Ghosts!

You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Just because we’re not in bodies,

Doesn’t mean we’re DEAD you know;

We’re still part of LIFE.

You’re the shadow,

We’re the substance.

Spirit isn’t in the body,

The body moves in Spirit.

Ghosts, indeed!

Deerness Doings….

First, a walk along the beach at Dingies Howe…..

…..where we saw an example of how coastal erosion takes its toll…..

Years ago, we walked along to the beginning of these steps then up, right round the headland and back along the road.  The fit and soople could still manage it, just about, but for us, it’s a memory.

Back through the dunes, where we saw a  reminder of the on-going Orkney stoat problem….

Then across the road to Sandi Sand…..

…where we saw a couple of Snow Bunting on the beach  (a bit fuzzy, as far away!) ….

Then…to the Dashing Deer for lunch…..

..where we were greeted by a jolly Halloween display……

The food was, as always, delicious….

Both the waitress and the chef took great care to make sure that Mike’s dietary requirements were catered for.

We had a look in the shop too.  I know....it’s a bit early.....but…well…couldn’t help thinking….Christmas presents?
