About Freshwater invertebrates

Freshwater invertebrates are a diverse group of species ranging from riverfly, dragonfly and damselfly, to freshwater shrimps, beetles, bugs and even the china mark moth caterpillars.

Together these animals form a diverse ecosystem ranging from algae grazing Trichoptera to deadly predators like dragonfly nymphs.

A healthy invertebrate community is vital for fish. They are after all the primary food source for our wild fish populations. This is why fish stock management needs to take a whole ecosystem approach and promote healthy and diverse invertebrate communities.

Invertebrates, particularly riverfly, are also good indicator species. They are acutely sensitive to pollution and chemicals in the water. This means they are fantastic for providing a picture of the health of a waterbody.
