ASTROIDS

Asteroids are primoridal objects left over from the formation of the Solar System.Asteroids are big rock or metal which created asteroid belt which is between Jupiter and Mars. While some have suggested that they are the remains of a protoplanet that was destroyed in a massive collision long ago, the prevailing view is that asteroids are leftover rocky matter that never successfully coalesced into a planet. Asteroid belt is around the Solar System Most planetary astronomers still believe that the planets of the Solar System formed from a nebula of gas and dust and ice that coalesced into a dusty disk around the developing Sun.The Asteroid Belt

About 90 per cent of all the asteroids in the Solar System are found in the Asteroid Belt, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Whether the Asteroid Belt represents the remnants of a planet that failed to form, or a planet that formed and was then destroyed, it is likely that Jupiter played a part in the process. Jupiter's gravitational influence has formed gaps in the Asteroid Belt, called Kirkwood Gaps. It also causes asteroids in Jupiter's own orbit to clump together, forming groups known as the Trojan Asteroids.
