THE INNER WHEEL CLUB of ANSTRUTHER
Welcome to our web page
At a time when women were not able to join Rotary, the first Inner Wheel club was founded in 1923 in Manchester. The chairman was Mrs. Margarette Golding wife of a Manchester Rotarian. The treasurer was Mrs Mabel Nixon and 25 other ladies attended.
Their aims were to support their husbands in the work they did within Rotary and to offer their services to needy people. They supported many local organisations and so the motto ‘ Service above self’ came into being.
From this, all the areas in GB&I were founded and in 1967 International Inner Wheel was founded. 103 countries are now represented and IW is the largest Woman’s organisation in the world, with some 3895 clubs and over 100,000 members. People are sometimes surprised to learn that women are often now both Rotarians and members of Inner wheel.
The Margarette Golding Award was created at the Eleventh Convention in May 2000 for service within IW and the wider community and so far over 200 people have now received this award.
Today, in the spirit of the original club, we still raise money and donate goods to charity. Each year at National level, the President chooses a charity to support, and the same happens at District level. Our own club also chooses the charities it would like to support. A list is shown below.
The aims of Inner Wheel are:
Our club is located within 'District 1' - the north of Scotland and the largest district within the UK. It is part of the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in Great Britain & Ireland and of the world-wide organisation of International Inner Wheel - IIW. You can click on the highlighted links to read more about these groups and also click here if you would like to find more about who can join.
The Inner Wheel Club of Anstruther meets almost every month of the year and has a busy programme of speakers and social events, as well as actively raising funds for charities and other good causes.
Finally, we alway enjoy the opportunity to talk to people about Inner Wheel. If you would like to contact us, please email our past president Mrs Elspeth Hunter by clicking here - don't forget to let us have your email address or telephone number.
