About Science

In this section of our site we'll look at issues in science both in science itself, and in its relation to society.

The relationship between these two themes was highlighted by Ilya Prigogine at the end of Order out of Chaos:

'It is quite remarkable that we are at a moment both of profound change in the scientific concept of nature and of the structure of human society as a result of the demographic explosion. As a result, there is a need for new relations between man and nature and between man and man.'

We also look at the kind of approach taken by Erwin Schrödinger, when he said:

'There is a tendency to forget that all science is bound up with human culture in general, and that scientific findings, even those which at the moment appear the most advanced and esoteric and difficult to grasp, are meaningless outside their cultural context.'
