Celtic Challenge Qualifiers
14 October 2012

Five RFC members played in the recent Celtic Challenge Qualifier with 3 players making the squad for next year’s challenge.

With 8 places up for grabs it was a little more open, with Wales being the host country next year.  Kon Tomczyck played with Glynn Atley and Phil Bradshaw, whilst Tansy played in her Ladies team with Julie Bailey and Gemma Foster (Monkstone and Wheatsheaf), Barbara Vaughan played with her Ladies teammate Karen McLeod and honorary girl Jack Dobbins (both Wenvoe), Peter Beresford played with Stewart Spencer and Garteh Spencer (Monkstone) whilst Pat Daviss played with Basil White and Simon Herbert (both Wheatsheaf).

The competition was played in a Swiss system with timed games.  Kon had a great day, winning 5 games from 6 and ending up in pole position as Wales 1; Tansy (having qualified as Wales 1 for the past 2 years) had to be content with Wales 5 (or as she prefers it, Wales 1 of the B squad) with 4 wins and handsome points difference; Peter won 3 games and is Wales 7, Barb won 3 games, but missed out on the top 8 (taking 10th spot) whilst Pat won 2, taking 13th place.

Well done to all and let’s hope Wales retake the trophy on home turf (or gravel) next year.
