Trip to the Ship

Our Trip to The Ship - 30 June 2012
Peter Beresford’s ‘other’ club –The Ship Inn in Keynsham near Bristol, extended an invite to us to have a friendly inter-club match. The RFC was rather short of players (player’s night might have had something to do with it!), so the format was converted to a 5 round melee. Tansy Mayfield, Barbara Vaughan, Pat Daviss, Kon Tomczyk, and Paul Mayfield made the trip over the bridge, and enjoyed a warm welcome and very good hospitality from Rich (landlord) and all the club members at The Ship. The club is in a lovely setting, next to the park and river, with terraced pistes offering lots of variety.

Paul, Tansy and Kon all lost in the first round, with Pat and Barb enjoying a good run of games. After a break for a well earned (and very good) lunch, the weather turned and we played through a couple of bursts of tropical rain – but the beer was good enough to keep us plugging away. After 5 games, 4 of the RFC finished up on 3 games – except Kon who could only mange 1 win (mainly thanks to his partner Barb who carried him to his one victory : P). In the end, Tansy was the only RFC player with honours (runner up of the Ladies) with Kath from the Ship taking top honours. For the men, Rich the landlord was runner up, with Glynn the deserving winner.

Many thanks to the club members of the Ship for such a warm welcome, to Peter for suggesting it and for organising, and to Rich the Landlord who obviously loves his job, keeps a good pint and has a great pub. We very much look forward to a return fixture and we hope we can do you proud. (special thanks to Barbara for excellent and legal driving).
