Uig, Skye, to Tarbert, Harris
A pleasant 90 minute ferry crossing across the Minch, with spectacular views of the islands, this crossing is an hour shorter than the alternative Stornoway - Ullapool crossing. This might be an important factor for passengers with sea-sickness problems.
Uig ferry terminal Uig ferry terminal - disabled toilets/mothers room. We would have preferred the generic term: "parents room" - and question whether the facilities required for nursing mothers are entirely compatible with dual use as a disabled access toilet. |
Uig ferry terminal - toilets Appear to meet most access requirements, but a close up inspection reveals no alarm cord or button to summon emergency assistance. This could be provided at minimal expense. |
Uig ferry terminal - toilets Changing bench - a very useful feature and to be commended. A simple overhead hoist or sling would help lifting heavy children or adults onto the bench. |
Ferry terminal toilets sign Ferry toilets sign - good practice. And to be fair, the toilets were spotless - well done Calmac! |
Uig ferry - lift from car deck This lift appears to be functioning well, albeit a little small for some larger wheelchairs and with a steep little entry ramp off the car deck. |
Access to ferry deck Difficult access to the outside viewing deck from the saloon - the door is narrow with a high step. Fire alarm button is inaccessible to people using wheelchairs or of shorter stature. |
Ferry deck access Other side of door from deck to saloon. It would not be unreasonable to design passenger ferries with wider doors and a retractable flood-sill. |
Ferry passenger using a wheelchair Mandy Robertson, from Aberdeen, was heading to Lewis for a family caravanning holiday. She said the crew of MV Hebrides were "First class". Thanks for sharing Mandy, it was a pleasure to meet you and your family, and we hope you had a great trip! |
