About The Wild North

Knowledge transfer and networking
This project will give tourism companies, scientists and official institutes across the Northern Periphery a chance to exchange knowledge and expertise in the wildlife tourism sector. This means that not only will participants get practical experience in research and cooperation, but also the chance to learn best practices from other more experienced participants. It is the partners´ hope that this project will enhance the awareness of both official and private entities and encourage them to work together towards sustainable development.

The Wild North seminars
The project will host three seminars/workshops, directly aimed at tourism companies, guides and others working closely with the wildlife tourism sector. These seminars aim to be of practical assistance to those who attend them, making it easy to integrate the seminar recommendations and techniques into day to day practices.

  • Seminar I Handle with care, how to run sustainable nature based tourism companies. Venue: Faroe Islands, Tórshavn
  • Seminar II : Wildlife guiding and interpretation. Venue: Undecided.
  • Seminar III : On-line marketing. Venue: Undecided

All TWN seminars are sponsored by NORA (Nordisk Atlantsamarbejde).

The Wild North Research
The main focus here is to conduct a three year research project at selected wildlife locations. This research will investigate the influence of increased tourism on wild animals. The conclusions of this research will be used to make a special “The Wild North Code of Conduct - TWNCC” for wildlife tourism operators and guests at wildlife destinations. This research is a joint effort between tourism companies, universities/sceientists and official institutes at each location. Another objective here is to make tourism operators aware of the importance of constantly monitoring the influence their operations have on wild animals at wildlife destinations.

The importance of close cooperation between private companies, scientists and official institutes is a major issue here. The continued collaboration between these groups is the most effective way of minimizing any potentially negative impacts of wildlife tourism and maximizing the long term sustainable use of the resource.
The importance of Wild North

The particular value and importance of The Wild North project comes from providing nature based tourism companies with the tools they need to ensure sustainable development of their operations. Thereby ensuring that the natural resources on which they rely can be used to create employment and support local economies for many years to come.

The Wild North offers a new way of thinking, where the focus is shifted from short term profit objectives to long term usage and protection. Wild North seeks balance and coexistence between society and nature. Our partners believe this can only be achieved through cooperation, education, knowledge transfer and sound scientific research. This in turn supports long term adaptive management of nature based tourism resources and the ongoing sustainability of the wildlife tourism sector.
