Career Path
Susan Banks studied painting at Croydon College of Art in the 1960s, gained her M.A. in 1995 and completed her M.Phil thesis, The Relationships Between Female Subjectivities And Contemporary Painting By Women in 2000. Her work has been exhibited widely since early solo shows at the University of Leeds and at Leeds Playhouse in 1972. She was an art tutor for the University of Hull until 2010.

Solo Shows
The paintings grouped as Elusion and Revision are founded in a fascination with the art of the past and are generated by a need to elude and revise the frequently troubling meanings of traditional narratives. The resulting decorative and richly textured abstract paintings hint at rather than reveal a complexity of sometimes subversive meanings that invite re-interpretation from their viewers.
Divertimenta is a body of abstract paintings produced between 1998 and 2007, it was shown at Red gallery, Hull in 2008, Persistence Works, Sheffield, in 2007, 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, Scunthorpe in 2005, The Ropewalk, Barton on Humber in 2003, the Peterborough Art House and the Oxmarket Centre of Arts in Chichester during 2002.
