I've been staying in Exeter (Devon, UK) for about a month now. I wanted to be in (or close to) a city that has an original cathedral - not a gothic revival one that is. So here I am. Everyday I walk by or pass close to the cathedral - and it speaks! Need I say more? Here are a couple of pics:
Ok, I'll say a little more! Slowly and steadily I am being drawn in; becoming increasingly fascinated by the geometry of the building and, in particular, the tracery of the windows...
This picture were taken close to mid-February in the middle of the afternoon as the sun was coming round to shine from the south-west, giving the main rose window a crystalline quality. Why, I wonder, did they create a five-sided star at the centre of this west-facing window? Was it to do with the sign of the Virgin and Venus perhaps? Cathedrals are aligned geomantically and Venus is sometimes visible in the west as the evening star...
Furthermore, the tracery in the aisle windows show great diversity of pattern and variation of theme... asking to be studied!
