 iTunes Slow Sync

Fixing slow iTunes sync of iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad (the backup issue)

Update October: As you can see from the comments this solution does work for most users with iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. Please leave a comment, which App causes the slow backup.

Since months I searched for a solution to fix the slow iPhone sync without restoring my iPhone or having to reinstall all my Apps. Finally I found a surprisingly easy solution, covert and buried in an Apple support forum thread. So I decided to write this down here, also to better remember how to fix it the next time… ;)

Note: If you’re wondering, this is still a development blog for Flash. I just thought this might be an important information for the people out there.

What causes the slow backup?

It’s the Apps! Apps on the iPhone might store data to work properly. Some do store a lot, some don’t. For instance a game saves some highscore data (not very much), where a newspaper App or a rss reader might save updated data (can be very much). I believe lots of iPhone users, that experiencing slow backups, have problems with one or many Apps that are leaking in terms of saving tons of tiny files to the iPhone, especially when they have a lot of Apps and when they did backups cross devices (i.e. iPhone 2G to iPhone 3GS).

First try the easy fixes

However, some users got the sync problem fixed with relatively easy solutions. You want to check them first.

- Huge Camera Roll
- Reset Warnings
- Also, I experienced, that iTunes seems to have problems when the hard drive with the music files is not connected to the computer.
- Make sure the latest iTunes version is installed.

Find the evil App

When the solutions above does not work for you, it’s probably an App (or many Apps) causing the backup problem.

First it’s generally a good idea to remove Apps that you don’t need anymore. I know, iPhone users (including me) tend to leave unused Apps on the device. Removing those apps saves you space on the device, speeds up the backup process (even if the app it not evil) and keeps the backup folder within iTunes small. So clean up!

Didn’t work? Ok, let’s go hunting…

1) Find the backup folder on you hard drive

Windows XP:
\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

Windows Vista / Windows 7:
\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

Mac:
\USERNAME\Library\Application Support\MobileSync\Backup

The folder has a strange long name like 6de624828c9d586e1f088f932798039e57e2af7c. To find the right folder (if you find more than one) open the settings in iTunes, go to devices and find the list “Devices backups”. Match the date of the last backup and the date of the folder.

2) Connect the iPhone and sync

First the backup progress bar in iTunes should move “normally”. After a while the progress bar stops. Probably this is the moment, where iTunes is backing up an App that is causing the endless loop.

3) Find the app

Get into the backup folder. Sort after date, so the newest files are on top. Every file iTunes backups actually consists of two files. The file with the data (.mddata) and an info file for that (.mdinfo), both again with a strange long name. While we cannot look into the actual data (can be an image, a html file, a plist file or whatever), we can have a look into the info file and see at least which App the file belongs to.

Start a text editor and open the .mdinfo file. It’s a binary file, so we see a lot of crap, however you also should see a string like this AppDomain-com.kayak.travel. There you go, the app iTunes is currently trying to backup is the Kayak app (Note: This is just an example, Kayak did NOTcause the slow backup in my case).

Wait some seconds. As you can see in the folder, the .mddata files a relatively small, so iTunes should move on to the next .mddata/.mdinfo file soon. iTunes still tries to backup the same file? Wait some more seconds. Still the same file? Well, we have a hit! The file iTunes tries to backup is corrupt.

In my case however, iTunes continued to backup files. So again, open the newest .mdinfo file. Same app as before? Wait another minute and open the newest .mdinfo file. Still the same app? Well, we have a hit! Although iTunes didn’t stop to backup, it has a hell of a lot to do by copying all files of the app from the device to the backup folder.

Note: Maybe iTunes continues to another app after a while and gets slow again. Then you have more then one “evil” app.

Let the sync run through (if it’s stuck, cancel it).

Do a clean backup

Unplug the device.

We want iTunes to make a clean backup. Copy the backup folder to somewhere else (can take some time). After this is finished, delete the backup in “Settings” -> “Devices” -> “Device Backups”.

Now delete the evil apps from the device.

Connect the device. Start iTunes (if it doesn’t start automatically). Start a sync (if it doesn’t automatically). Since iTunes does not find a backup file, it’ll do complete backup, which may take a while.

After that is finished do another sync, it should be super fast. Yeah!

Happy!

For me the App that caused the problem, was a newspaper app, that seemed to keep all (old) articles on the files system of the iPhone. After removing the app everything went back to normal.

A side effects was that the size of my backup folder went from 1GB to 100MB.

Thx Aron – that helped! I already suspected the VLC app for my 1 hour backup time but now its a fact! I love the VLC app and even in version 1 it already does a great job, but the downside really is that the vidoes will get backed up ecery time! I guess its rather for Apple to get a bit more sophisticated with their backup process cause I dont really understand why the need to backup files that haven’t changed since the ast backup… any idea on that?
    cheers, joern

I’m Happy, too! Thanks for the great tip! I was finally able to upgrade to ios4! I found one app the backup just hung on, then 2 news apps that were storing gobs of stuff (~15,000 backup files). You rock!

Thank you thank you thank you. You did it!!! Mine was also a newspaper app.

Again thank you and you sure do rock!

The solution offered helped me to identify the backup problem.
The process of analysing the source of the slow backup can be simplified as follows:
    1. make a backup copy (be patient)
    2. go to the backup folder and analyse the mddinfo file, using the file timestamp. Analyse every first occurrence of every minute. calculate the total time for every apps.
    3. You can ignore any application missing. these ones take less than a minute to backup.
    4. using the data collected you can figure out which applications are causing the slow backup.
    5. take whatever action is applicable on the problematic apps. (clearing cache on your ipad and/or re-installing the app)
it shouldn’t be to difficult for somebody with programming skills to make a simple program to do the analysis automatically

I’m on Mac OS X 10.6.5. It doesn’t appear like I have a MobileSync folder. Any other ideas where iTunes is storing my back-ups? Thanks!

It does work for me to shorten the back up time significantly.

    Many Thanks.

    Hello!
Well the slowest backups definitely comes from newspapers and magazins, which are dowloaded to be read offline.
I checked my German applications and the evils are:
    - Spiegel ereader: 340 Minutes for 26 issues (13 minutes per issue)
    - Schweizer Illustrierte: 13 minutes per issue
    - Das Magazin: 3 minutes per issue
    - Frankfurter Rundschau: 2 minutes per issue

So you’re saying, that if for example, the Wired app, was causing my slow backup, I’d have to remove it permanently from my iPad?

  10. AronNovember 23rd, 2010 / 09:56 / #1481

You can try to remove and re-instal it. That should at least free you from all the old garbage.

This is the best thing I have found yet on how to fix backup problems, thank you VERY much for your post, knowing what to look for that is hanging up is extremely useful!

Whew, thanks! I was about to pull my hair out. Mine was the People Magazine app.

  13. SteveNovember 25th, 2010 / 19:10 / #1488

Really helpful…my problem was an external hard drive that had been connected when I last backed up…downside is I need it to be connected now if I want to back up! Anyway, I now have a way of backing up so am happy. Thanks.

    Excellent this helped me !!!

A little late to the show, but instead of worrying which app in specific, because they’re all super slow on mine.

The best fix I’ve found is to minimize iTunes during sync or any communication with the ipad. Probably works for the phone too.

You’ll probably find that all work more respectably if you simply minimize itunes during sync.

iTunes in the old days used to tell us what it was backing up (if memory serves). But Thank you for this workaround (I now hate you Huffington Post and NY Times !).

An alternative to deleting “evil” apps is to turn off the power saving features of your computer and just let iTunes take its time.

Windows 7: Control Pannel/Harware and Sound/Change when the computer sleeps .

Thanks so much! By following your steps to “Find the Evil App”, I was able to determine that my People Magazine App (and all of its downloaded data) was causing the slow backup. Once I deleted the 10-15 magazines, the backup completed within 5 minutes.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to try it as I’m unable to update my iPad to 4.2 because it’s stuck at “backing up” for hours. As much as I like the mobile iOS, I’d have to say that iTunes for PC is the worst piece of software engineering that I’ve seen ever. It tops even RealMedia player. And that’s saying a lot.

This article was good information on the backup process but before I could try it, I noticed that the activity light on my card reader, which was plugged into the same USB hub as my iPad which was crawling through a backup, was flashing as if something were attempting to read or write data but there was no memory card installed. Thinking that some part of the backup process might be getting confused by the presence of a foreign memory device, I unplugged the card reader and the backup started to fly. Files that would have taken several minutes were backing up in seconds.

For the record, my PC is a Dell GX 740, running 32-bit Windows 7, with 32G of RAM on board

My iPhone takes a loooooooooong time just to be seen by iTunes, before I even have an opportunity to sync. What’s up with that?

I just upgraded my ipad to 4.2.1 and used redsn0w to tethered jailbreak. I got good news, my backup used to take 24+ hours to finish now only took about 3 mins. I checked the backup files and Apple now used the iphone type to do the backup, not the other mdinfo type. So Apple did realize they did something wrong and correct it.

  22. DinoBobDecember 21st, 2010 / 07:05 / #1501

Great job! Mine was a newspaper app as well (USA Today).

  23. Peter VictorDecember 27th, 2010 / 17:15 / #1507

Thanks! This pointed me in the right direction. I dumped my Huffington Post app; the most recent version permits you to download all articles, along with thousands of accompanying images, so I suspect that was a lot of it. I also deleted Epocrates and WebMD (I’m not a doctor, after all, and aside from it being cool to carry that sort of info, I never actually need it), and now the backup takes under a minute, instead of 5-6 hours.

Thanks very much for this. Found that my iPad was getting stuck on the following apps:

    - Floe
    - Granimator
    - DoodleFit
    - Farmville (got very stuck here lol. I think if I’d removed this one in the first place the others probably would have been okay.)

Thanks a lot!!! I tried some backups with more than 36h. Now it works fast.

  26. JorgeJanuary 8th, 2011 / 02:17 / #1515

    Thanks, this helped so much.

  27. MichalJanuary 8th, 2011 / 22:57 / #1516

Thanks ! It turned out that one of my favorite apps was the culprit for me: ITrans NYC. iTrans NYC not only gives you a view of the subway map itself, but you can also view neighborhood maps which the MTA creates.

Normally, you grab neighborhood maps as you need them, but a new feature however,
let’s you get all HUNDRED or so of them at once . It turns out that made my backup move only 30% points after 12 hours .

wow! Just deleteing some of my apps made it all better!!!! im soooo happy now!! thanx website!

You just saved my a**!!!! I went from a 20+ hour backup to about 10 minutes!!! YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found my evil app, killed it and WAHLA!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!
