Thinking of joining Resolis WRI?

Come along to one of our monthly meetings usually held on the second Tuesday evening each month in Resolis Memorial Hall. You can attend up to 2 meetings as a guest before you commit to membership. The current membership fee is £15/year.

Visitors and new members can feel a bit lost at their first meeting or two and so we hope this sheet of information helps. Just ask if you don’t understand something or want to know more.

NATIONAL: We are part of the organisation called Scottish Women’s Rural Institutes. SWRI headquarters is in Edinburgh and it is from here that Scotland-wide and international issues are discussed and events such as national conferences, summer schools and competitions including golf and bowling are planned. There is a national magazine called Scottish Home and Country,  a calendar and an SWRI diary and you can order these if you want.

REGIONAL: At regional level there are Federations. There is a Federation Committee who organise region-wide events such as subsidized cookery and handicraft classes as well as competitions, visits and disseminate information to all the local institutes through a newsletter and meetings. Resolis WRI is one of currently 21 instititutes in Ross-shire Federation.

LOCAL: Resolis WRI has a committee elected annually. Their role is to arrange speakers and events, ensure the smooth running of the institute and make sure it remains solvent. We pay an annual subscription, some of which goes to National and some to the Federation. What we are left with pays for the venue, speakers, prizes etc. The institute subscribes to a copy of Scottish Home and Country but individual members may prefer to have their own copy (ask the Magazine Secretary).

MEETINGS: We have monthly meetings from September to May when we have our Annual General Meeting. We start at 7.30pm with out speaker who talks for 45 minutes. We always have a raffle with tickets currently at £1. The prizes are wrapped up and donated by members and usually brought to the September meeting to be collected by the committee member organising raffles. You will see members put pennies/silver into a jar on the front table and this goes to our chosen charity for the year.

After our speaker we have refreshments. We take it in turns to provide the baking (don’t be ashamed if it is shop bought, mine always is!), serving and clearing away. We have two competitions each month. One requires some degree of skill e.g. handicraft/cooking whilst the other is a ‘fun’ thing e.g. a posy of weeds. The member with the most points in each category gets a prize at AGM.

Each year, Ross-shire Federation organises two major shows: one is called the Bulb and Baking Show and the other Handicraft Show. Whilst most of the entries are on an individual basis there is one entry that requires co-operation between members of the institute. Although these shows aren’t until spring you will hear us planning from September. If you are interested just ask for a schedule and entry forms – nothing ventured nothing gained!

Please let us know at any time if you can’t hear during a meeting or if there is anything we can do to make your experience at Resolis WRI more enjoyable. We are a friendly, fun-loving lot and really want you to feel welcome. You can find out more by visiting the SWRI website or giving one of us a call.
