Sussex Pastfinder projects

Following research into the history and location for potential Pastfinder projects, the process begins to gain permission to carry

out a search.  This will involve discussions with landowners and tenant farmers.  Once granted the search will begin, and if the land is cultivated this will be in sympathy with the crop cycle of the land.

Fieldwalking is combined with metal detecting wherever an exposed ground surface allows it.  Fieldwalking enables the recovery of of non-metallic artefact such as ceramics, glass and flint.

Our Group work strictly in accordance with the Code of Practice for Responsible Metal Detecting in England and Wales.  This document is endorsed by a good number of key stakeholder bodies such as the National Farmers Union, Council for British Archaeology, English Heritage, Museums Libraries Archives Council, National Council for Metal Detecting and the British Museum.

All Sussex Pastfinders carry Public Liability Insurance with an indemnity value of £10 million
